“Chromesthesia”, a type of synesthesia, is a perceptual phenomenon involving neurological conditions in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in another sensory or cognition. Chromesthesia usually refers to when heard sounds automatically and involuntarily evoke an experience of color, and audio-visual works are a good example of such phenomenon.
 
The concept with audio-visual art is partially derived from the concept of Gesamtkunstwerk (“total work of art”) proposed by Richard Wagner, which describes the perceptive behavior of art that combines all feelings into a comprehensive experience. In the digital era with advancing computer software and hardware, the synchronicity of the two time-based art forms (sound and image) has become a common applied technology; however, the decisions involving how to conduct the synchronicity, what guidelines should be established for the different elements to connect with each other, and also how to convert information of different forms rely on how artists define and manipulate these media. Similar to the Fluxus that began by defining concepts and instructions for art, the rules were then followed by the artists in completing the steps needed for creating their artworks. The programs, algorithms, and random numbers behind audio-visual works have become the flux and happening of this era. The audio and visual components in the artworks by Ryoichi Kurokawa and Herman Kolgen could not just be seen or heard; the two are an inseparable unified whole, and their complete audio-visual sculptures are the results of cross-references and inter-conversions of the audio and visual components.
 
On view in this exhibition are Dividing A thing into Hollow and Substance Equally #1 and Tilted by two sets of Japanese artists, with the connection between sound and image focused on by the artists. Paths to the Past by Aluan WANG transforms the landscape from the artist’s hometown into a soundscape, with images that have been three-dimensionally treated transmuting at real-time via sound. Digital Cortex by Vibert Thio presents documented information stored in a digital device in a sound format. Codenamehk: shitennou by HO Him Shun (bjorn) takes old songs from Hong Kong and stores memories as sounds, which are then transformed into images. XR-XATA-01 by NAXS Corp. constructs an enclosed realm with sounds and images for the audience to experience.
 
Audio-visual works in different formats have become quite ubiquitous in other countries, and although some artists in Taiwan are also engaged in the genre, it is, nonetheless, still nonmainstream. The objective of this exhibition and its related activities is to appeal to more people and perhaps for them to also get involved in making art
